The premise of the wheel of consent is that when we’re sexual (and in many other contexts in our lives), we move between different zones. Often we’re not consciously aware of which zone we’re in.
Dr. Betty Martin developed the Wheel of Consent as a model of relating. It brings clarity and greater authenticity to all areas of our lives: from work colleagues friends and family and in our most intimate relationships. It helps us distinguish between the ‘doing’ aspect of an interaction (who is doing?) and the ‘gift’ aspect (who is it for?).
Asking these questions together creates four possible exciting dynamics. Each of those has a different flavour, and requires a different type of consent agreement.
This is the central insight of the Wheel of Consent, from which many consequences and insights flow.
